I’ve had this cake planned for weeks to bring to work for Easter. I couldn’t wait for them to see my Easter Kit Kat Cake. After my cousin posted a similar cake on Facebook, I thought it was the cutest ever. Almost too cute to eat! The inspiration for this cake came from one that had M&M’s as the topping. You could really almost use any candy bar you like as the outer edge, and top with any candy you like! For Easter, I thought it would be fun to make it look like an Easter basket. I colored some coconut and sprinkled the top with Cadbury Mini Eggs.
So, how’s it taste?
I used a box cake mix for this to make it super easy. My favorite box mix/tub combination is yellow cake with chocolate frosting. Feel free to make your cake and icing from scratch. You’ll need enough for a two-layer, 8″ or 9″ cake. Any flavor combination would work for this treat. Strawberry, coconut, German chocolate. Whatever you feel like pairing with a Kit Kat! My coworkers loved it. It was so pretty, no one dove into it like they usually do. I finally had to be the one to make the first cut. It was as delicious as it was pretty. Sure to be a hit at your Easter shindig!
Easter Kit Kat Cake
Ingredients:
your favorite cake
your favorite icing
22 (.49 oz. size) Kit Kat bars (I bought 3 packs of 8 of the snack size)
sweetened coconut flakes (I used about 1/3 to 1/2 of a 14 oz. bag)
green food coloring
Cadbury Mini Eggs
ribbon
Directions:
1. Bake your favorite cake recipe for a two-layer, 8" or 9" cake. (For this cake, I used Duncan Hines yellow cake mix.) Make sure to even out your layers so there's some room left at the top for your coconut.
2. Frost with your favorite icing. (For this cake, I used Duncan Hines chocolate icing.)
3. Press the Kit Kat bars around the cake gently.
4. Place the coconut in a zippered plastic bag. Add drops of green coloring (I used 4) and close the bag. Shake until the color blends evenly. Add more coloring if necessary.
5. Sprinkle the coconut over the top of the cake. Add the mini eggs.
6. Tie a ribbon around the Kit Kat bars.

I love this! So cute, and actually easier than it looks. I have a TON of left over toasted coconut from a pina colada cake recently, so I may have to try this. How is it to cut it? You take off the ribbon first right? But do you cut through the Kit Kats?
Yep, take the ribbon off first. It’s pretty easy to cut as the Kit Kat bars are only two pieces together, so I cut a slice between them. It makes for a slender piece, but it works!
That is too cute!!! Love the Kit Kat’s.
OMGoodness – this is brilliant! Looks way too good to even cut into!
This is absolutely BRILLIANT! I have got to make this!
That is so awesome. So many of my favorite things in one cake. 🙂
Just shared on my blog Facebook page. I LOVED this cake!
Thanks for the shout out!
This is a really cute idea that’s very easy and fun to decorate. I’d say that any beginner can create this beautiful cake with these easy-to-follow steps. Thanks for sharing your idea.
they have edible Easter grass now that doesn’t taste terrible
What an absolutely amazing idea!
Um, do you have a calorie count for this?
Ha, ha! I could probably count up the calories, but it won’t be pretty. My philosophy is if you have to ask, it’s not in your budget, lol!
What a clever idea to decorate a cake! I bet it will work just as well for a birthday party if you change the colour of the coconut to suit any party theme. By adding small plastic toys or figures made from modeling paste according to the theme, this cake will be a big hit amongst the party guests.
Thanks for sharing this.
[…] those delicious Kit Kat cookies to create a birthday cake for kids of a different kind! You see it turned out as a wonderful Easter cake in this graphic, but the possibilities are endless […]
Kit kat cake is fantastic. Can’t wait to try it myself. Thanks for the idea.
Question! How do you go about cutting into it?
Hi Brandi! Take the ribbon off first. It’s pretty easy to cut as the Kit Kat bars are only two pieces together, so I cut a slice between them. It makes for a bit smaller piece than normal or you can take some of the Kit Kat bars off a section right before you cut it, if you want a bigger piece.
I love this idea! However is there Any substituted for the coconut?
You could probably pipe fake grass on with icing using Wilton tip #233. It’s designed to pipe out small strands of icing that look like grass. Or maybe try just a dirt route by crushing oreos on top to look like the dirt!
This turned out so lovely. I wanted to let you know that I featured you in this round up at: http://printabelle.com/?p=1709 If you would like a featured button, I have one here on my About page: http://printabelle.com/?page_id=724
Thanks!
Thanks so much!
I like white cake with cool whip topping & coconut, do you think the Kit Kats will stick to the cool whip? Thank you.
Hi Marybeth! I’ve never tried it with cool whip, but my guess is that it wouldn’t support the weight. Since cool whip is so light, I think you’d have the Kit Kats moving around and I’m not sure the toppings would hold up without a sturdy wall of Kit Kats.
Has anyone tried with the White Chocolate Kit kats for a white fence?
I haven’t seen one yet, but I bet it would be cute!
I don’t see how you used two layers and mini kit kats. Weren’t the layers way to tall. I’m in the middle of making this now and with the reg. Size kit kats I only need one layer of cake. Lol I’m so confused !
Hi Cassie! I used the snack size kit kats. You can see in my picture how the grass comes up a bit where the top layer is “domed” on the top. From pictures I saw using regular kit kats, they stuck up a lot so I opted for the snack size. If you were making the cake that has the design of filling up the “basket” with M&M’s, you might want the taller ones. But the snack size works great for this Easter version.
I used edible easter grass instead of coconut and it worked great!
Oh I bet edible grass is so cute and works great for folks who don’t care for coconut!
I’m going to make this cake for Easter..looks really yummy
What do you mean by two layer cake??
It’s two layers of cake, with icing in between them.
I love this cake! So adorable! I’m keeping this idea for Easter. Thanks for sharing
It seems that if you broke each KitKat in two they would go on just as easily but you could cut larger slices of cake. Look at me wanting bigger pieces already.
I have no complaints with bigger slices of cake!
I will have to try this for Easter, and I am saving the Reciepe, Thank you sooo much, it is just great.
Where do you buy edible Easter grass?
I’m not sure. I’ve never bought it. Maybe try somewhere like Michael’s or a specialty store.
They have some at walmart in the Easter aisle!
This is darling!!! I have a new set of square cake pans and I am going to do this cake with it .. thank you !
Where did you get the ribbon from?
That particular one I bought at Walmart. Just about any ribbon would work.
thanks but I dont think they have walmart in england but i’ve been looking online and can’t find any multi coloured ribbon, only single colours, do you know any website I could buy some from?
I personally haven’t purchased ribbon online. Amazon.com may have some or Nashville Wraps (http://www.nashvillewraps.com) is a good place to try. I’m not sure of where they ship though.
Thanks for the link, but I looked and they didn’t have any multi-coloured ribbon but thank you anyway
did you use dessicated coconut?
I used sweetened coconut flakes.
I made this for my family at our pre easter dinner last night, with a passionfruit filling. Everyone loved it! Thanks for the idea 🙂
hi,
i love this cake design but was wondering how well the kit kats stick? They seem like they might keep falling off. Is the trick in the type of frosting?
They stick pretty well and the type of frosting doesn’t matter. The ribbon helps to keep them in line as well.
I made this tonight for Easter tomorrow, it came out amazing and was soooo easy. Now I cant wait to eat it 🙂 thank you for the amazing idea 🙂
Thank you for this recipe! My aunt tried it and it turned out great 🙂
I also wanted to let you know that I shared this recipe
Best
Thanks for the recipe! i read it from another blog and click to the link and see your blog! thanks again! (i like this funny and cute cake so much)
Love this cake! Absolutely adorable. I have 5 kiddos that would love it..Going to have to give it a try
Oh my! This is perfect.
Hi 🙂 your cake is awesome… I am
planning on making it for Easter.. I bought
all the ingredients.. Including the 22 snack size kit kats..
I’m just worried that a two Layered cake with frosting in
the middle will be so much larger then the size of the small kit kat
.. Are they Doubled under the ribbon? But then
you would need 44? I’m just worried that I will not
have enough and I will be sending my husband
scrambling on Easter morning looking for kitkats..
Thank in advance for any advice 🙂
Thanks, Theresa! What is listed in the ingredients and what you see in the pictures are what I used. I can’t remember if I used an 8″ or 9″ pan for the cakes though. That is a double layered cake and I used the specified Kit Kats. They aren’t doubled. I’ve seen some people use regular Kit Kats, but they really stick up. You could always use those and put more coconut on top to fill it up.
Can you put the coconut grass on earlier in the day ? Just wondering if it stays nice or gets soggy or anything?
Hi Sandy! Yes, you should be able to put the coconut grass on earlier. It shouldn’t get soggy for several hours.
Beautiful cake. Do the kitkats get soggy over time?
Hi Sandy! Yes, eventually they will, but should be good for several hours. I’ve never had a cake last long enough for them to get soggy though!
Good work! The cake looks beautiful, and it jut makes me comfortable! I believe you are good at using colors.
